In 1967 with Chichester at the helm Gipsy Moth IV sailed into the history books as she approached Plymouth on May 28th. No sailor had ever before sailed single handed around the world in such a short time. A crowd of quarter of a million people watched Chichester’s triumphant return, and he was subsequently knighted by Queen Elizabeth II using the same sword that Queen Elizabeth I used to knight Sir Francis Drake.
Under the auspices of UKSA, Gipsy Moth IV has just completed her second circumnavigation, 40 years after Sir Francis Chichester’s, giving almost 90 young crew members across 32 legs of the voyage an experience they will never forget. These young people were identified as those who would not ordinarily have access to sailing or the sea, and would most benefit from the confidence building and personal achievement that such an experience provides.
